The world’s first device designed by man that could break the sound barrier was probably the whip. The crack one hears is because of the tip travelling faster than the speed of sound.

Only in 1958, by analysis of high-speed photography, was it confirmed that the whip crack is because of the tip travelling faster than the speed of sound and creating a small sonic boom and not the whip slapping itself.
