The stickman figures used in public signs, and especially sports, stem from the work of German graphic designer Otl Aicher. For the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Otl had designed the stick figure pictograms. They later became popular worldwide.

The 1972 Olympics are, however, infamous for the “Munich massacre” – the killing of 11 innocent Israeli athletes and coaches by a 8-member Black September Palestine terrorist organisation. The 2005 Hollywood movie Munich depicted the events of the massacre and the subsequent revenge (Operation Wrath of God) by the Israeli government.
