The Cyrus Cylinder, from the rule of Cyrus The Great of Persia, is recognised as the first charter of human rights. It mentions racial and religious equality, slaves to be freed and returned home and all destroyed temples to be restored.

The cylinder dating close to 538 BC was discovered by Hormuzd Rassam and now lies in the British Museum, London.
